In WebCT, messages that I have viewed in the past have disappeared. Why can't I see old messages?
The WebCT default setting hides messages you've already read. To change this, from the first screen in a topic choose "All messages" instead of "Show unread."

My professor says the quizzes/assignments are due at noon, but the WebCT quiz/assignment screen says 3pm. What's happening?
The WebCT clock is set to Eastern time, three hours ahead of Pacific time. Your professor's deadlines are the official deadlines for the course.

I received my orientation letter a few weeks before the term. When I go to the class Webpage and enter my username and password, it says I'm denied access. What's wrong?
It is too early. Instructors usually open the course on the day it starts according to the academic calendar. Wait until the first day of the term and try again unless you've received other instructions from the professor.

May I use both my work and home PCs to access my eCampus class during days and evenings?
eCampus classes are offered asynchronously and can be accessed 24 hours a day. Participating in the class requires Internet access, a Web browser and, in some rare cases, browser plugins such as Acrobat Reader and Real Player. Please review the Browser Tune-up page for technical requirements.

If you use multiple computers to access the class, we suggest using a Web-based email account provided by Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. to avoid storing your mail on a single machine.

I can't view videos on the class website.
Viewing streaming videos requires special software that may not be loaded on your computer. See: ATN Webcasting for more details. Even properly loaded plugins require specific "Transport Settings" to access video through the SJSU firewall.

I want to post an MSWord document with attached text such as headers, footnotes, etc. into my course's WebCT discussion. My professor says not to attach files. How do I do this?
The discussion board is only capable of displaying ASCII text and HTML codes like italic and bold. One way to incorporate footnotes in text is to use[1] this format.

[1] A note may be indicated by a number in brackets and listed at the end of the document.

The catalog says I need to take the Writing Skills Test before I can add this class. Is that true for online classes as well?
Yes. The WST is a requirement for all students regardless of the mode of instruction. If you've taken an equivalent test at another university, that may count. We suggest contacting Academic Services at 408-924-2575 and ask to speak with the Testing Office.

I'm a student in the Library Science program. I want to take a distance class and don't know how to get started.
SJSU's School of Library and Information Science uses a course management system different from the rest of campus named "Blackboard." Check the SLIS website for more information and contact the Library Science Department at (408) 924-2490, office@wahoo.sjsu.edu.

Isn't an "online class" completely online? Do I need to come to campus?
Most classes have required on-campus meetings or field trips to help you meet the professor, classmates and receive technical instructions. Ask your professor and check the specific class Welcome page.
top

I can't log in. What's my password and username?
Find your course Web address. To determine your password and WebCT ID, please go here. Try this scheme and contact your professor if you cannot access the course after the first day of the term.
top

When Do Classes Begin and End?
Generally, classes follow a traditional SJSU semester or session schedule. However, some classes begin a week earlier or later than session start dates.
top

How Do I Locate My Class on the Web?
See the list of course Welcome pages.

eCampus will send you a URL address to locate your class. Once you have located the site, send an e-mail to the instructor. This is critical. You will be communicating with the instructor and fellow students throughout the semester and it is important that you log on immediately.
top

How Do I Contact My Instructor?
A letter of introduction is mailed a few weeks before the term and lists the instructor's e-mail address. Contact your instructor immediately. If you have questions or concerns about the course, assignments or due dates, please contact your instructor. For other concerns contact eCampus at 408-924-2670 or e-mail de@cemail.sjsu.edu.
top

How Do I Submit Homework?
Depending on your class, assignments may be emailed, posted to a discussion board or even uploaded to an "Assignments" area.
top

How Often Should I Participate in a Class?
You need to check the class syllabus and follow the dates, activities and interaction provided by the instructor. It is important to turn in all assignments on time.
top

How Are Exams Conducted?
Methods may include e-mailed exams, e-mailed papers or proctored exams. Some exams may be given on campus.
top

How Do I Evaluate My Course/Instructor?
You will receive instructions for submitting course/instructor evaluations via the Web. Your comments help to identify strengths of the course and where the course may need to be revised. Your evaluations are important to eCampus. All evaluations are kept confidential.
top

What Type of Credit Can I Earn?
Degree credit classes are academic courses. You will receive a letter grade for these classes.
top

How Much Does an eCampus Class Cost?
Tuition for degree credit eCampus classes is $185 per unit for special session students. For regular San Jose State University students, the cost is part of your tuition fee.
top

Is Financial Aid Available?
New Federal guidelines are being developed for distance education students. Call the SJSU Financial Aid office at 408-924-6100 or University Continuing Education at 408-924-2670.
top

How Do I Drop a Course?
You may withdraw (drop) a course during the first four weeks without
academic penalty if an approved drop form is completed and filed with the SJSU Student Resource Center.
